Exotic India with Conan

This advertisement for American Express features Conan O’Brian, a very popular celebrity, travel through India in search of the perfect silk for his stage curtains. He walks through an extremely crowded street where he is the only white person and everyone else is wearing matching hijabs, turbans, and clothes. There are also very few faces shown. This scene instantly characterizes all Indians as part of this exotic culture that is extremely foreign and different to Americans. Conan also proceeds to barter and speak a different language with the locals. In reality, most people in India speak English, and the practice of wearing turbans and hijabs is declining. The world is much more globalized than what is perceived in the media. Later, he is shown riding an elephant and then washing clothes in the river. These scenes suggest that this is normal activity in India but in reality, it is not.
